Harrow

Accident recovery in Harrow.

Harrow is one of the few parts of London where gradient is a genuine factor in a recovery. Harrow-on-the-Hill is steep, narrow and largely residential, and loading a damaged vehicle on a slope is a different job from loading one on the flat.

On the ground

Written for someone dealing with this now. If it is easier to talk, the number is at the top of every page.

Gradient and narrow streets

On the Hill and the surrounding roads, a winch-and-slide load has to account for the slope, and a vehicle with damaged brakes or steering behaves differently on a gradient than it does on level ground. It is a job that wants doing carefully rather than quickly.

The streets are also narrow and heavily parked. A long truck may not be able to get alongside the vehicle at all, in which case a Hiab lifting from the nearest accessible point, or a van, is the answer.

Suburban Harrow and the A404

Away from the Hill, much of Harrow is interwar suburb: wider roads, driveways, and generally straightforward access. These are usually the simplest recoveries we do in North West London.

The A404 and the roads towards Wealdstone and Stanmore carry heavier through-traffic, and shunts at the junctions along them are common. If the vehicle is driveable and can be moved into a side road first, that makes the collection easier.

Storage while you sort things out

Harrow has more driveways than inner London, so leaving a damaged vehicle at home is sometimes possible. It is not always sensible: an insecure vehicle with broken glass or an opened-up body deteriorates quickly and is exposed to whoever passes.

Secure storage keeps it intact and available for assessment, which protects your position on the claim as well as the vehicle.

Questions

Asked here in particular.

My car is on a steep street and will not roll — can it be recovered?
Yes, but tell us about the gradient and the fact it will not roll when you call. Both change which equipment we send.
Can I leave the car on my driveway instead of storing it?
You can, but consider whether it is secure and weathertight. If it is opened up or the glass is broken, storage usually protects both the vehicle and your claim better.
